Summer Brings Forward Progress

September 20, 2006

This was a great summer for the Cleveland Community Field Project. With generous support from all sectors we have passed the halfway mark of our fund raising goal – over $1,000,000 to date - and are on course to begin construction next May.

We started off with the ambitious challenge of raising $150,000 (in $1000-$5000 donations) to be matched through a grant from the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund. Our ambassadors made the rounds generating excitement about the Project among Portland ’s philanthropic community. Additionally, many area businesses and families jumped at the chance to double their money by making their contributions this summer. By September 1st we had met the goal and increased our grand total by $300,000! We so appreciate the great opportunity the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund provided.

In June, the Project successfully lobbied the City of Portland for one time funding of $150,000. The City Council recognizes that locally accessible neighborhood recreational facilities are part of the infrastructure that make Portland livable. The completion of the Project will support the fitness goals of residents of all ages, and ease the burden on Parks & Recreation fields. (Read all about it)

And now, the Project is very happy to announce it is partnering with the prominent construction firm of Lorentz Bruun. Through the support of Kelly Bruun, CHS class of ’64, the firm will serve as general contractor for the installation of the track and field. They have been reviewing the plans created by parent volunteer/landscape architect Joe Percival over the summer and we will soon have detailed costs and a timeline for construction. This development is especially pleasing because Lorentz Bruun Construction has such strong ties to the community – as a family owned southeast Portland business for over 60 years, and as a family descended from pioneer Clinton Kelly who settled much of the neighborhood and dedicated the school land where Cleveland High is located. Lorentz Bruun Construction is a natural fit to play an essential role in making this needed neighborhood improvement.
