Field Construction in Progress!

September 6 , 2007

You may have noticed that the Cleveland field is all torn up! Wonder what’s going on? Read all about it:

Background: In Fall 2003, the CHS PTA received a $50,000 grant to resurface the existing track. In the process of researching similar area projects, the decision was made to upgrade the entire track and field facility and the “Cleveland Community Field Project” was formed.

Where we are now: With over $1.2 million raised in cash and in-kind donations to date, the soccer/lacrosse/football field is currently under construction!!! This is a lengthy process, involving excavating over 600 loads of dirt, followed by the building of the base for a synthetic turf field – a fabric has been laid down, and base rock is going in this week. Smaller rock goes in over the following 2 weeks, and then the synthetic turf “carpet” goes down (a 3-4 week process). We are projecting completion of the field mid-October, hopefully done by Homecoming on October 19.

What we still need: While we have the cost of the field construction covered, there are still two phases of the Project that need funds: the track and the remaining facilities (grandstands, concessions, fencing, landscaping, etc…). Each phase, if completed today, will cost at least $500,000. Our next immediate goal is to upgrade the track with a polyurethane running surface, as the existing track is virtually unusable.

To raise the first $500,000 for the track, we will be pursuing private donors and foundations for a portion of this, but parent and community support is needed to be a part of the financial picture.
