The Cleveland Community Field
Project is working to restore and enhance Cleveland
High School's existing outdoor athletic facilities located
at SE 31st & Powell.
We all need
a place to play
The City of Portland projects a shortage of 100 fields
by the year 2020 based on population growth projections.
This facility will not only meet the needs of Cleveland
students but also support youth and adult sports leagues,
athletic clubs and general public use.
Upon completion, this polyurethane track
will be the only premium running surface within a ten
square mile area in Southeast Portland and the synthetic
field turf will be the only playing field of its kind
south of Delta Park.

Why upgrade the existing
facilities?
Save Money
Synthetic turf reduces maintenance costs. Annual maintenance
costs of a grass field can be $20,000-$50,000, compared
with closer to $1,000 a year for synthetic turf.
Increase Usage
The facility will accommodate the growing demand for
fields by schools, community youth and adult soccer,
Frisbee, PAL football and lacrosse leagues. The Oregonian
recently compared Sam Barlow High School's grass field
to Gresham High's synthetic turf field. It found that
Barlow typically holds around 50 events a year, while
Gresham was able to host nearly 2000 events, practices
and games a year.
Fewer Injuries
Synthetic fields reduce injuries. Studies have shown
that athletes sustain fewer injuries on synthetic turf
fields than they do on grass.
Ecofriendly
The Cleveland Community Field Project
benefits the environment by reducing water use, eliminating
fertilizer run off, and disconnecting from the city
storm sewer. Other ecological features will include
bioswales and solar panels.
To Keep Pace
Major upgrades such as the Lincoln High School renovation
and the Cleveland Community Field Project
will enable the Portland Interscholastic League to compete
with new and improved sports facilities emerging throughout
the state. Our young athletes deserve the same high
quality facilities that are currently available to many
of their competitors in other communities.
